Chemical Peeling

Chemical peeling uses a chemical solution to remove layers of skin, revealing the more youthful skin underneath. Chemical peels can reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne, scars, uneven skin coloring, and other imperfections. In simpler terms, it is a skin-resurfacing procedure.

What are the types of chemical peels ?

You get three different types of chemical peels depending on the depths. These include –

  • Superficial peels – This peel uses mild acids like alpha-hydroxy acid that gently exfoliate the skin. It goes through the outermost layer of skin only.
  • Medium peels – This peel uses trichloroacetic or glycolic acid to reach the middle and outer layers of skills. It is effective for removing dead and damaged skin cells.
  • Deep peels – These fully penetrate the middle layer of the skin to remove damaged skin cells; these peels often use phenol or trigonometrical acid.

Why do you need it?

Chemical peels can improve the skin’s appearance. In this treatment, we apply a chemical solution to the skin, which makes it “blister” and eventually peel off. The skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled after the chemical peel.

Chemical peeling is beneficial for the face, neck, or hands. It can:

  • Reduce fine lines around the eyes and mouth
  • Treat wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of mild scars
  • Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) caused due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills.
  • Improve the look and feel of skin.
  • Sun damage may improve after chemical peeling.

The Benefits of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can improve many skin issues. Some most common benefits of chemical peels are –

Acne is a common inflammatory skin condition. Chemical peels can help to control them.

The procedure can:

  • Break down comedones (plugged hair follicles)
  • Decrease oil production
  • kill bacteria
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increase absorption of topical treatments

Light and medium chemical peels can improve acne.

Acne Scars

The skin creates new collagen fibers to repair lesions as the acne heals. The production of new collagen fibers can either create hypertrophic scars (these are bumpy and raised) or atrophic scars (these create depressions in your skin). A chemical peel exfoliates the top layer of the skin and removes the excess collagen. Medium chemical peels are best suited for acne scars.

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition. It causes redness, swelling, and red bumps. It’s known as acne rosacea when it causes acne-like breakouts. A chemical peel can help in relieving these symptoms sometimes. It’s typically best suited for mild or moderate rosacea.

Aging Skin

Chemical peels can help in reducing multiple signs of aging, like –

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Age spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Roughness
  • Dryness</li.
  • Liver spots

The production of collagen and elastic is triggered when the skin grows back after a chemical peel. It makes your skin supple and healthy, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The new skin is smoother, with decreased roughness and dryness. Doctors don’t recommend chemical peels for removing deep wrinkles. It is also not effective in tightening sagging skin.

Hyper Pigmentation

Chemical peels can help in improving other forms of hyper pigmentation, such as

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Melasma
  • Freckles
  • Surgical scars</li.
  • Scars due to injury</li.
  • Discoloration due to sun damage

You may benefit from chemical peels if you have dull complexion. The treatment allows resurfacing of new skin, which may make your complexion look brighter and healthier.
